Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums characterized by swelling, redness, and a tendency to bleed easily. Although it is not a severe condition, many people do not pay adequate attention to its treatment and prevention. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more serious condition that may ultimately lead to tooth loss.
The primary causes of gingivitis include plaque buildup and food impaction between teeth.
Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that accumulates when food particles and saliva combine. Over time, if not removed, plaque hardens into tartar (calculus) due to the mineral deposits from saliva. The toxins produced by bacteria in plaque and tartar irritate the gums, causing inflammation.
Poor tooth alignment or improper oral hygiene can cause food to become trapped between teeth. If left unaddressed, this can lead to gum irritation, inflammation, and eventually tooth decay.
Healthy gums are firm, light pink, and do not bleed easily. However, when gingivitis occurs, the following symptoms may be present:
The primary treatment for gingivitis involves eliminating its causes, mainly plaque, food debris, and tartar buildup.
Certain factors can worsen gum inflammation, including:
These factors require additional consideration and management in gingivitis treatment.
Since gingivitis is not immediately severe, many people neglect proper care. However, if left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, a more advanced and destructive form of gum disease that can lead to tooth loss.
