Genital warts are a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) affecting both men and women, caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). This virus spreads through skin-to-skin and mucous membrane contact, meaning condoms do not offer complete protection as they don't cover all affected areas. After exposure, the virus can remain dormant under the skin for 3 weeks to 8 months before symptoms appear.
Typically, genital warts appear as flesh-colored growths or rough, raised bumps on the skin. They are usually painless and non-itchy. If left untreated, genital warts can potentially lead to skin cancer. Various treatment options are available, including topical medications, electrocautery, and laser therapy. Vaccines are also available for both men and women to prevent HPV infection.
Treatment for genital warts depends on their size and location.
CO2 laser treatment is an effective option, often used for larger warts, cases unresponsive to topical medications, or for faster resolution. Benefits include quick healing and a lower recurrence rate, with minimal scarring. Patients can typically go home immediately after the procedure.
Regardless of the chosen treatment, it is crucial for sexual partners to also seek treatment to prevent re-infection.
