Genital Warts

Genital warts are a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) affecting both men and women, caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). This virus spreads through skin-to-skin and mucous membrane contact, meaning condoms do not offer complete protection as they don't cover all affected areas. After exposure, the virus can remain dormant under the skin for 3 weeks to 8 months before symptoms appear.

Symptoms

Typically, genital warts appear as flesh-colored growths or rough, raised bumps on the skin. They are usually painless and non-itchy. If left untreated, genital warts can potentially lead to skin cancer. Various treatment options are available, including topical medications, electrocautery, and laser therapy. Vaccines are also available for both men and women to prevent HPV infection.

Genital Wart Treatment

Treatment for genital warts depends on their size and location.

For Small Warts:

  • Tincture Podophyllin 25%: Applied by a doctor, typically once or twice weekly. Treatment may take about a month.
  • Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) 80-100%: An acidic solution applied by a doctor once or twice weekly.
  • Imiquimod 5%: Can be applied at home by the patient. Apply before bed every other day or three times a week, leaving it on for 6-10 hours before washing off with soap and water. Continue until cleared or for a maximum of 16 weeks. Side effects may include inflammation, irritation, hardening, sores, blisters, and localized skin lightening.

For Large Warts or When Topical Medications Fail:

  • Cryotherapy: Freezing the warts.
  • Electrosurgery: Burning the warts with an electric current.
  • CO2 Laser: Vaporizing the warts with a laser.

CO2 Laser Treatment for Genital Warts

CO2 laser treatment is an effective option, often used for larger warts, cases unresponsive to topical medications, or for faster resolution. Benefits include quick healing and a lower recurrence rate, with minimal scarring. Patients can typically go home immediately after the procedure.

Treatment Steps:

  • A numbing cream is applied to the treatment area for 45 minutes. For smaller warts, topical anesthetic may suffice, avoiding injections and pain.
  • The doctor performs the laser procedure, which takes approximately 15-30 minutes. You may feel slight sensations but no pain.
  • After the procedure, the treated area will be an abrasion. The doctor will apply medication, and small wounds may not require dressing.
  • The doctor will provide wound care instructions. Wounds usually heal within 1-2 weeks.

Regardless of the chosen treatment, it is crucial for sexual partners to also seek treatment to prevent re-infection.
