Molluscum Contagiosum

Molluscum contagiosum is a contagious skin infection caused by a poxvirus. Transmission occurs through direct skin-to-skin contact, including sexual contact. Condoms do not prevent this infection. In adults, lesions typically appear in the genital area, while children may exhibit them across the body, such as in armpit and knee creases, and on the torso.

Symptoms of Molluscum Contagiosum

Initially, symptoms manifest as small red spots that evolve into small, reddish bumps, sometimes containing a white, waxy core. A characteristic central dimple may be visible. These lesions resemble acne but are not inflamed. When squeezed, they expel a thick, white, rice-like substance. While molluscum contagiosum often resolves spontaneously within 6–12 months, it can persist for up to 5 years.

Early treatment is recommended to prevent the infection to others and other body parts. Various treatment methods are available, including topical medications, cryotherapy, and laser therapy.

Treatment for Molluscum Contagiosum

Treatment options vary based on the number and location of the lesions.

Topical Medications:

  • Tincture Podophyllin 25%: Applied by a healthcare professional 1-2 times per week. Treatment may take approximately one month.
  • Imiquimod 5%: Can be self-applied at home three times per week, typically before bedtime. Leave on for 6-10 hours, then wash off. Continue until cleared or for a maximum of 16 weeks. Potential side effects include inflammation, irritation, hardening, sores, blisters, and localized skin discoloration.
  • Tretinoin 0.1% cream: Applied once daily at bedtime.
  • Sterile needle extraction: Lesions can be pricked with a sterile needle, and the white, waxy core expressed.

Advanced Treatment Technologies

  • Electrosurgery: Uses an electric current to destroy the lesions.
  • CO2 Laser: Uses a laser to vaporize the lesions.
  • Cryotherapy: Freezes the lesions using liquid nitrogen.
  • Pulsed Dye Laser: Targets blood vessels within the lesions.

Cryotherapy for Molluscum Contagiosum

Cryotherapy is an effective treatment that destroys abnormal tissue using extreme cold. Liquid nitrogen, at -196°C, freezes and kills the molluscum lesions. This method offers rapid healing, short treatment times, minimal pain, and no downtime.

Procedure Steps

  • A healthcare professional uses a device containing liquid nitrogen or a cotton swab dipped in liquid nitrogen to apply it to the warts until the appropriate treatment depth is reached. A white, ice-like halo will form on the skin.
  • Patients may experience a mild cold and stinging sensation during treatment. You can go home immediately after the procedure; no dressing is typically required.
  • You can shower normally. Within 1-2 days post-treatment, a scab will form and peel off. Follow-up appointments are usually scheduled in 1-2 weeks. Typically, 2-3 sessions are needed, depending on the number of lesions and their response to treatment.

Dermatologist's Recommendation

While molluscum contagiosum often resolves spontaneously in immunocompetent individuals (taking from 2 weeks to 4 years), it is not recommended to wait for self-resolution. This is because the infection can spread to other areas of the body and to others.
