Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum, transmitted through contact with bodily fluids.

4 Stages of Symptoms

Stage 1: Primary Syphilis

Symptoms appear within 3 weeks after infection.

  • Patients develop sores on the genitals or anus, called chancre, characterized by firm, painless edges.
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the groin may occur.
  • The symptoms can resolve on their own within 3-8 weeks, but the bacteria remain and progress to the second stage.

Stage 2: Secondary Syphilis

Symptoms appear 3-12 weeks after infection.

  • The bacteria spread to the lymph nodes and bloodstream.
  • Patients may develop rashes on the body, palms, and soles.
  • These rashes may disappear within 2-3 weeks, but the bacteria persist in the bloodstream, progressing to the next stage.

Stage 3: Latent Syphilis

  • The bacteria remain dormant in the body, causing no symptoms while gradually damaging internal organs.
  • This stage can last up to 20 years before progressing to the fourth and final stage.

Stage 4: Tertiary Syphilis

  • At this stage, the bacteria severely damage internal organs, causing symptoms depending on the affected systems, such as the cardiovascular or nervous systems.

Treatment and Prevention

Syphilis is curable with proper treatment. However, if left untreated, it can cause systemic complications and lead to disabilities. Early treatment is crucial.
