nutrition in young children

The nutritional development of young children is a crucial aspect that parents should pay special attention to, especially during the initial stage of introducing foods other than breast milk.

Appropriate Age to Begin Rice Consumption

1. From 6 Months of Age

The period from 6 months onward is considered an appropriate time for introducing complementary foods alongside breast milk.

  • 6 months: The child can begin with one main meal per day. It is recommended to start with well-cooked, finely mashed rice mixed with vegetables and half a boiled egg yolk, alternating with one tablespoon of other protein sources such as fish, mashed liver, and one piece of ripe fruit per day.
  • 7 months: Half a boiled egg yolk can be given, alternating with one tablespoon of other meats.
  • 8 months: The number of meals can be increased to two per day.
  • 9 - 12 months: The child can have three meals per day. Food quantity and texture should be gradually increased to encourage chewing and swallowing skills.

It is recommended to mix half a teaspoon of vegetable oil into daily meals to provide essential fatty acids and sufficient energy.

2. From 1 Year

At this stage, children can start eating soft-cooked rice and foods with a wider range of textures. However, it is important to avoid added seasonings and foods that are hard or pose a choking hazard.

3. From 2 Years

From age two onward, children can eat rice and meals similar to those of adults. However, the flavoring should still be moderated, and foods high in sodium and sugar should be avoided.

Foods to Avoid for Young Children

  • Hard or sticky foods such as shelled nuts, candy, and jelly
  • Large-sized foods that pose a choking risk such as whole grapes and uncut sausages
  • Strongly flavored or highly seasoned foods, including snacks, sweetened beverages, and flavored milk
