Atrial Fibrillation (AF)

Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is the most common type of heart arrhythmia. During AF, the atria beat rapidly, often over 350 times per minute. This can lead to blood clots forming in the atria, which may then travel to the brain, causing a stroke and sudden paralysis.

How to Check for AF Yourself

Place your index, middle, and ring fingers on an artery, such as your wrist or inner elbow. Gently press down and count your pulse for one minute.

Normal Pulse

A normal pulse has three characteristics:

  • Rate: Between 60-100 beats per minute.
  • Rhythm: Regular and consistent.
  • Strength: Consistent.

AF Pulse

An AF pulse typically shows:

  • Rate: Over 100 beats per minute.
  • Rhythm: Irregular, alternating between fast and slow.
  • Strength: Inconsistent, varying between strong and weak, with occasional missed beats.

Other AF Detection Methods

  • Blood pressure monitors
  • Pulse oximeters
  • Mobile applications

Stroke caused by arrhythmia is easily preventable by regularly checking your pulse.
