Essential Tremor is a condition that causes involuntary shaking of the body, most commonly affecting the hands and arms. However, it is not Parkinson's disease, despite exhibiting similar symptoms. This condition can occur at any age, particularly among the elderly. Accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help alleviate symptoms and improve the patient's quality of life.
Essential Tremor (ET) is a neurological disorder affecting the central nervous system, particularly the cerebellum, which is responsible for movement and balance. This condition causes tremors during voluntary movements, such as reaching for a glass of water. The primary cause of ET is genetic inheritance.
Essential tremors can occur at any age and usually affect both sides of the body simultaneously. Some individuals may also experience head or voice tremors. Genetic factors contribute to approximately 50% of cases. The severity of symptoms may increase due to stress, fatigue, or the consumption of caffeinated beverages.
Parkinson’s disease typically causes tremors when the patient is at rest, whereas essential tremor occurs during movement. However, both conditions share similarities in that symptoms may worsen under stress, excitement, or anxiety.
Diagnosis of ET involves a thorough medical history, physical examination by a neurologist, and blood tests to rule out other causes of tremors, such as thyroid disorders.

Patients should consult a specialist for proper diagnosis and treatment. Initially, doctors will determine whether the patient is taking any medications that could contribute to the tremors, such as bronchodilators or psychiatric drugs. Treatment options may include medications or rehabilitative therapy. In severe cases where medication fails to control symptoms, Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery may be considered.
Since essential tremor is often hereditary, treatment focuses on symptom management rather than a cure. Physicians may prescribe medications or recommend lifestyle adjustments to help manage the condition.
