Chocolate Cyst

Chocolate Cyst is a fluid-filled sac in the ovaries that forms from ectopic endometrial tissue (tissue similar to the lining of the uterus growing outside the uterus). The sac contains old, thick, brown blood that resembles melted chocolate, hence the name.

Warning Signs (Symptoms)

Be cautious of the following symptoms:

  • Severe lower abdominal pain during menstruation (dysmenorrhea), which may also occur outside the menstrual period.
  • Abnormally heavy or prolonged menstruation (menorrhagia).
  • Pain during sexual intercourse (dyspareunia).
  • Difficulty conceiving (infertility).
  • Painful or bloody urination or defecation during menstruation.

Treatment for Chocolate Cysts

Treatment is determined by a doctor based on cyst size and symptom severity. Options include:

  • Hormonal medication (like birth control pills) to help reduce the cyst size.
  • Surgical removal of the cyst if it is large, causes severe pain, or doesn't respond to medication.

Important Recommendation

If you experience recurrent lower abdominal pain or abnormal menstruation, you should seek an ultrasound examination.

Do not ignore these symptoms, as advanced lesions can:

  • Affect future fertility.
  • Cause pelvic adhesions, leading to chronic and severe abdominal pain.
  • Spread to nearby organs such as the ureters, rectum, or bladder, complicating treatment.

Early diagnosis and treatment lead to better treatment outcomes.
