Uterine fibroids: A common problem in women of reproductive age

     Uterine fibroid is a mass formed by the abnormal growth of uterine muscle tissue. It is commonly found in women of reproductive age. Most are non-cancerous (benign) masses, and most often do not cause symptoms, but symptoms may sometimes be present.

Possible Symptoms

• Abnormally heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
• Lower abdominal pain, pelvic heaviness/pressure
• Frequent urination, pressure on the bladder
• Some cases are asymptomatic and found through ultrasound
• Bloating, abnormal eating or bowel movements
• Consulting for infertility

Impact of Uterine Fibroids

• Causes anemia due to excessive blood loss
• May affect pregnancy or cause infertility
• Chronic lower abdominal pain
• Large mass compression can cause hydronephrosis (swelling of the ureter/kidney)
• If the mass is large, there is a risk of deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the legs)

Treatment

• Small and asymptomatic fibroids: periodic monitoring of symptoms and size is considered
• Use medication to alleviate symptoms, such as reducing menstrual bleeding and pain
• Surgical removal of the fibroid (myomectomy) or removal of the uterus (hysterectomy) (for severe cases or if no future pregnancy is desired)
