tooth decay in post-dental care

Tooth fillings offer great benefits, restoring decayed or damaged teeth. However, if not properly maintained, the filled area can decay again. This is called "Inception tooth decay".

Why can decay recur after a filling?

Decay often reoccurs at the junction between the filling material and the tooth surface. This small gap can become a breeding ground for bacteria. If not cleaned properly, the area can decay again.

Post-filling Care

To prevent this, patients should follow these dental care recommendations:

  • Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day for a minimum of two minutes. Avoid eating for at least two hours after brushing.
  • Use dental floss to clean between your teeth where your toothbrush can't reach.
  • See your dentist every six months, or at least once a year, for a check-up. This is crucial for early detection of decay. If left too long, minor decay that could be treated with a simple filling might progress to the point of needing a root canal or even a tooth extraction.
  • Regularly check the filling for any cracks, chips, or discoloration. If your floss shreds or there's a bad odor around the filling, see your dentist immediately.
