It is believed that many teenagers and adults, particularly those in the working age group, experience premature graying of hair. Typically, hair turns white after the age of 50. However, some individuals may develop gray hair at an earlier age due to various internal factors, environmental conditions, or exposure to certain chemicals. While premature graying is not a serious health issue, it may cause one to appear different from others of the same age group.

Causes of Premature Graying

1.  Genetics

Genetics is one of the primary causes of premature graying. Individuals who experience graying hair at an early age may have inherited this trait from their family. If you have gray hair at a young age, it is advisable to observe or consult your parents to see if they had the same experience.

2.  Deficiency in Protein and Vitamin B12

The human body requires essential nutrients such as protein and Vitamin B12 in sufficient amounts daily. Melanin, which is responsible for keeping hair dark and healthy, relies on these nutrients. These can be found in various animal-based foods, including chicken, duck, shrimp, shellfish, crab, fish, and dairy products such as milk, yogurt, and cheese. Additionally, taking dietary supplements may help ensure adequate nutrient intake.

3.  Smoking

In addition to its harmful effects on the lungs, smoking damages other organs in the body, including the mechanisms responsible for pigment production in hair. Individuals who have been smoking since adolescence are at a higher risk of developing gray hair compared to non-smokers.

4.  Stress

Stress is another significant factor that affects the efficiency of stem cells in hair follicles. It weakens hair strands and disrupts normal pigment production, resulting in premature graying. Moreover, excessive stress may also lead to increased hair loss.

Prevention of Premature Graying

  • Ensure adequate intake of protein and Vitamin B12.
  • Avoid smoking.
  • Reduce stress.
  • Get sufficient sleep and rest.
  • Exercise regularly.
