It was said at the time that COVID-19 originated from bats. In light of the current situation, we would like to revisit past events and explore diseases directly linked to animals.

3 Major Diseases Transmitted from Animals

1. The Black Death (Bubonic Plague)

The Black Death was caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, with rodents and fleas serving as the primary vectors. Initial symptoms include fever, chills, body aches, muscle pain, vomiting, fatigue, sore throat, and headache. In more severe cases, it leads to swollen lymph nodes. The disease can be categorized into three types:

  • Bubonic Plague – affecting the lymph nodes
  • Pneumonic Plague – affecting the lungs
  • Septicemic Plague – affecting the bloodstream and leading to sepsis

2. H5N1 (Avian Influenza or Bird Flu)

When people hear the term bird flu, many recall the period when the outbreak significantly impacted the poultry industry, even causing a sharp drop in fried chicken sales across the country. Initial symptoms resemble those of other illnesses: high fever, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, conjunctivitis, and flu-like symptoms. As the name suggests, birds typically transmit the virus through contact with their secretions.

3. Rabies

Rabies, also known as hydrophobia, is a viral disease found in mammals such as cats, bats, rodents, and dogs. While it is less commonly seen today due to ongoing vaccination campaigns, it remains a serious concern.

Symptoms

Early symptoms are often difficult to detect, and the incubation period can range from three weeks to three months, or even several years in rare cases. The danger of rabies lies not in its contagiousness, but in the fact that, once symptoms appear, there is currently no effective treatment during the critical stage.

Summary

No matter how advanced technology becomes, diseases continue to pose a threat. Therefore, it is essential not to overlook the importance of safety and hygiene, especially when it comes to matters close to home, such as pets. If you notice any unusual symptoms in your animals, be sure to take them to a veterinarian promptly for a thorough examination.
