Chancroid is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) affecting both men and women, caused by the bacterium Haemophilus ducreyi. This disease can lead to enlarged, painful, and suppurating lymph nodes, particularly in men, often in the foreskin area. Chancroid is curable with oral or injectable antibiotics.
Symptoms typically manifest 3-10 days after exposure, beginning with a tender, red papule that evolves into an ulcer with a purulent base and raised, inflamed borders. These ulcers can be quite painful, and smaller lesions may coalesce into larger ones. Lymphadenopathy (enlarged lymph nodes) that can become suppurative is common, especially affecting the inguinal lymph nodes in men.
