Uterine fibroids

Uterine fibroids are growths that occur in the muscle tissue of the uterus. Most of them are non-cancerous tumors, but they can cause symptoms that interfere with daily life.

5 important symptoms that may indicate you have uterine fibroids:

  • Heavy and prolonged menstruation: Excessive bleeding that requires frequent changes of sanitary pads, large blood clots in the menstrual flow, and periods lasting longer than 7 days.
  • Lower abdominal pain or lower back pain: Experiencing cramping in the lower abdomen similar to menstrual cramps, but more intense, or persistent lower back pain, especially during menstruation.
  • Frequent urination or constipation: Feeling the urge to urinate frequently or not being able to fully empty the bladder because the fibroid is pressing on the bladder. Chronic constipation can occur if the fibroid presses on the large intestine.
  • Abdominal bloating or a mass in the abdomen: Feeling that the abdomen is unusually bloated, similar to bloating, or noticing a hard mass in the lower abdomen.
  • Pain during intercourse: Experiencing pain during sexual intercourse.

If you experience these symptoms, particularly irregular menstruation, chronic abdominal pain, or an enlarging abdomen, you should consult a gynecologist for an ultrasound and a proper diagnosis.

Most uterine fibroids are not cancerous, but if left untreated, they can cause complications such as anemia or infertility. Early detection can lead to more effective treatment.
