Ovarian cyst

Ovarian cyst is an internal sign that should be closely monitored. To help understand this condition, Dr. Srisupa Laohapakorn explains that a cyst is a fluid-filled sac that can occur in various organs, such as the ovaries, liver, or kidneys.

Types of Ovarian Cysts

Ovarian cysts can be categorized into three main groups:

1.  Functional Cysts

  • Caused by hormonal changes.
  • May be a Follicular Cyst or a Corpus Luteum Cyst.
  • Mostly harmless and usually managed by monitoring the symptoms.

2.  Pathological Cysts

  • Cysts caused by disease.
  • Subdivided into benign (non-cancerous) and cancer-related cysts.

3.  PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)

  • A condition involving many small ovarian cysts.
  • Caused by abnormalities in multiple bodily systems, including hormones, the endocrine system, obesity, and genetics.

Diagnosis of Ovarian Cysts

Diagnosis begins with a doctor taking a medical history and performing an ultrasound. Initial examination may sometimes require a CT scan or a blood test for ovarian cancer markers. However, these methods cannot guarantee a 100% confirmation of cancer. Further testing, such as a surgical biopsy, may be necessary.

If you have any concerns about ovarian cysts, you should consult a gynecologist.
