Pancreatic Cancer: Need to Know Before It Spreads

November 06 / 2025

pancreatic cancer

Pancreatic cancer is a difficult disease to diagnose. Most patients only experience symptoms when the disease is advanced, which significantly lowers the chance of recovery. How can we recognize the risk before the disease develops, and what symptoms serve as warning signs? A doctor aims to build an understanding of the disease, starting with the basic things close at hand.

The Importance of the Pancreas

The Pancreas is an organ located between the stomach and the spine. It has several key functions, including:

  • Producing enzymes to digest fats.
  • Creating the hormone insulin to regulate blood sugar balance and reduce the risk of diabetes.

Understanding Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic Cancer is a condition of malignant growth in the pancreas, arising from various risk factors such as genetics, heavy smoking, and diabetes. Because the pancreas is close to the bile duct, a cancerous mass in that area may press on the bile duct, leading to co-existing conditions.

Symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer

Common symptoms of pancreatic cancer include:

  • Pain in the upper abdomen radiating to the back.
  • Yellowing of the eyes and skin (jaundice).
  • Chronic bloating/indigestion.
  • Darker urine color.
  • Unexplained weight loss.

Diagnosis

Doctors currently use several methods for diagnosis, starting with a patient history, physical examination, and additional tests as determined by the physician:

  • CT Scan: Used to assess the size, number, location, and spread of the cancer to nearby organs. MRI may also be used to provide clearer details.
  • EUS (Endoscopic Ultrasound): A doctor inserts an ultrasound scope through the mouth down to the pancreas for a more accurate assessment of the disease.
  • ERCP: Another type of endoscopy used to check for abnormalities in the bile ducts and pancreatic ducts, as symptoms can sometimes arise from co-existing conditions.

Treatment of Pancreatic Cancer

The treatment plan is determined based on the patient's condition and stage of the disease:

  • Surgery: Often the primary treatment for non-invasive stages or when the mass is surgically removable.
  • Radiation and Chemotherapy: Used when the disease has spread or when the tumor is not suitable for surgery.
  • Bile Duct Drainage: Performed if the patient's symptoms are caused by the cancerous mass obstructing the bile duct.

Close post-treatment care will be provided by the medical team.
