It is commonly known that individuals with diabetes tend to have elevated blood sugar levels. Therefore, maintaining proper blood glucose control is essential, as it helps prevent various long-term complications such as diabetic retinopathy, kidney deterioration, peripheral neuropathy, or numbness in the feet. Blood sugar control can be achieved through medication, dietary management, and regular exercise. Today, we encourage individuals living with diabetes to embrace exercise as part of their daily routine.

Exercise Helps Reduce the Severity of Diabetes

Engaging in appropriate and consistent physical activity has been scientifically proven to lower blood glucose levels. Moreover, it can prevent the onset of diabetes in individuals at risk. During exercise, the body requires more energy to support increased movement, and its primary source of energy is glucose. When one exercises sufficiently, the body uses blood sugar to generate energy, thereby reducing glucose levels in the bloodstream. In addition, exercise increases insulin sensitivity in body tissues.

In simple terms, with the same amount of insulin, the body can use more glucose, resulting in a reduction in blood sugar levels. This long-term effect enables patients to better manage their blood glucose and may even lead to a reduction in the dosage of medications or insulin injections required.

Why Diabetic Patients Should Exercise Regularly?

  • Helps lower blood glucose and HbA1c (average blood sugar)
  • Reduces blood pressure and cholesterol levels
  • Decreases the risk of complications such as cardiovascular disease and stroke
  • Alleviates stress
  • Reduces visceral and subcutaneous fat
  • Supports weight control and promotes weight loss in overweight individuals
  • Strengthens the cardiovascular system and heart muscles
  • Enhances cardiac output and improves circulation
  • Builds muscle strength

It is important to exercise consistently and pair it with dietary adjustments to effectively control blood sugar levels. Exercise should be incorporated as a routine part of daily life rather than practiced in short, intense bursts, which may increase the risk of injury.

Know Your Risks: Undergo a Fitness Assessment Before Exercising

Before initiating an exercise program, individuals with diabetes should undergo a risk screening to ensure safety and to gain maximum benefit from physical activity. A qualified professional will perform a physical fitness evaluation tailored for diabetic individuals.

  • Assess the risk of cardiovascular disease by determining the presence and severity of any heart-related conditions.
  • Use the results to design a suitable and safe exercise program

For safety and optimal results, consultation with a specialist for a fitness assessment is highly recommended.
