Chemotherapy, or 'chemo', involves administering drugs to destroy or stop the growth of cancer cells. It comes in various forms and may be used with radiation. Since this treatment can cause discomfort, self-care is vital before, during, and after the process.
Side Effects of Chemotherapy
Side effects vary based on the drug, physical and mental readiness, and may include:
- Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite
- Diarrhea
- Hair loss
- Low immunity
- Fatigue

Preparation Before Treatment
- Prepare cleansing items for personal hygiene.
- Avoid crowded places to reduce the risk of infection.
- Inform your doctor of any pre-existing conditions or regular medications.
- Visit a dentist to prepare your mouth and teeth, especially concerning cavities or gingivitis.
- Undergo a general check-up and lab tests.
- Eat a meal approximately 2-3 hours before starting chemo.
- Empty your bladder before the treatment.
- Lie still in the most comfortable position.
During Chemotherapy
- Monitor symptoms (e.g., fever, nausea, vomiting) with the medical team.
- Drink plenty of water to help flush chemicals from the kidneys.
- Immediately report any swelling, redness, blistering, or bruising at the injection site.
- Avoid self-medicating.
Self-Care After Chemotherapy
- Live normally and get adequate rest.
- Drink at least 1.5 - 2 liters of water daily.
- Eat small, frequent meals, focusing on easy-to-digest foods during nausea or vomiting (e.g., soup, rice porridge).
- Keep scheduled doctor's appointments and blood tests to monitor bone marrow function, liver, and kidney values.
- See a doctor immediately for abnormal symptoms like fever, drowsiness, severe fatigue, inability to eat, severe diarrhea, or severe vomiting.
