Craving Sweetness: What Diseases are at Risk?

July 13 / 2025

The reason we crave sweetness is that it stimulates the release of dopamine, the happiness hormone, leading to addiction and a constant desire for sweet foods. Consuming too much sugary food causes high blood sugar levels, which disrupts insulin function. Cells become insulin resistant, and this is the starting point for various diseases, such as:

Sweet Cravings and the Risk of Certain Diseases

  • Diabetes Severe insulin resistance prevents the pancreas from lowering blood sugar levels. The resulting high blood sugar can ultimately lead to diabetes.
  • Heart Disease High-sugar foods increase the risk of heart disease because sugar affects the heart's pumping process, raising triglyceride levels, bad cholesterol, glucose, and insulin in the bloodstream.
  • Obesity Sweet foods increase hunger and prevent feelings of fullness, making you feel like you can never eat enough. This leads to easy weight gain without realizing it.
  • High Blood Pressure Sugar increases catecholamine hormones and uric acid, both of which contribute to high blood pressure.
  • High Cholesterol Consuming excessive starch and sugar leads to the accumulation of triglycerides in the body, raising blood fat levels.
  • Tooth Decay Sugar is easily digested, and bacteria in the mouth multiply rapidly, causing various oral health problems such as cavities, enamel erosion, gum disease, and bad breath.
  • Cancer Insulin is a hormone that controls the growth and spread of cancer cells. Increased or unstable insulin levels may contribute to the growth of cancer cells in the body.
  • Bone Disease Sugar quickly enters the bloodstream, causing an imbalance in blood. As the blood becomes more acidic, the body compensates by pulling minerals from the bones, making them brittle and prone to fractures.

Although eating sweet foods can bring happiness, consuming too much puts extra strain on the body and leads to various diseases. Therefore, it is recommended to enjoy sweet foods in moderation.
