Breast cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Thai women, after cervical cancer. It can develop unnoticed, especially when tumors are too small to be detected by touch. Mammogram screening is an effective method for early detection and significantly reduces associated pain.

What is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer involves abnormal cell growth in the breast, which can spread to surrounding tissue, underarm lymph nodes, and other parts of the body. The stage of cancer depends on factors such as tumor size and hormone status. Most cases are diagnosed at stages 2 or 3. However, early detection and treatment significantly improve the chances of complete recovery.

Mammogram Screening

Digital Mammogram combined with Breast Ultrasound is a specialized imaging technique that uses low-dose radiation alongside ultrasound for diagnosis. It assists physicians in planning appropriate treatment and offers accuracy comparable to X-rays with reduced radiation exposure.

Benefits of Dual Imaging (Mammogram + Ultrasound)

  • Both tests can be done simultaneously within 30 minutes.
  • Very low radiation exposure—20–30% lower than conventional chest X-rays.
  • Provides clearer imaging for precise localization of abnormalities, including tumors, cysts, or calcifications.
  • Especially effective for women with dense breast tissue, where other methods may be less accurate.
  • Mild to moderate discomfort may occur due to breast compression, which is necessary for clear imaging.

Who Should Get Screened?

  • Women aged 40 and above.
  • Those with a first-degree relative diagnosed with breast cancer before menopause.
  • Individuals experiencing breast changes, such as a lump in the breast or underarm, nipple discharge, or pain.

Self-Examination Recommendation

All women are advised to perform monthly breast self-examinations and undergo professional screening at least once a year.

Preparation Before Screening

  • Avoid applying powder, lotion, or deodorant on the breast or underarm area.
  • Wear the hospital-provided loose-fitting clothing for easy access during the exam.
  • Inform the doctor if you have breast implants or detect any abnormalities such as lumps.
  • If possible, get screened at a facility with your prior medical records or bring them for reference.

Note: During the exam, a technician will assist in positioning the breast on a platform. The machine will gently compress the breast to capture high-resolution images for detecting internal abnormalities.
