Tattoos Removal With Laser

Tattoos involve the insertion of pigment into the skin, leaving tiny puncture wounds from needles or tattoo machines. Once healed, the pigment remains in the skin layers permanently. Tattoos may be done for decorative purposes or to enhance certain parts of the body, such as eyebrow tattoos or eyeliner tattoos.

Laser Tattoo Removal

When a tattoo is no longer desired, various methods for tattoo removal have emerged, including re-tattooing, dermabrasion, or using acid peels. However, these methods may not always be effective; for example, they might not match the natural skin color or can result in permanent scarring from excessive abrasion. Laser tattoo removal, specifically designed for this purpose, is a safer alternative with fewer side effects compared to other treatments.

What is a Pigment Laser?

A pigment laser is a laser that operates at a wavelength specifically absorbed by the pigments in the skin. When the area being treated is exposed to laser light at the correct timing and energy, areas with denser pigment absorb more energy than normal tissue, breaking down the pigment. This process minimizes the impact on surrounding tissue, resulting in minimal side effects, faster healing, and very little scarring compared to other treatments.

Steps in Laser Tattoo Removal

  • The doctor will apply a topical anesthetic or inject local anesthesia to the treatment area.
  • Once the anesthesia takes effect, the doctor will use the laser, which may feel like a slight snapping sensation or mild discomfort during the procedure.
  • After treatment, small scabs may form and typically fall off within a week. Gradually, the tattoo will begin to fade.

How Many Sessions Are Required for Complete Removal?

Typically, a tattoo can fade by 80-90% after approximately 5-6 sessions, spaced about a month apart. However, the ease or difficulty of removing a tattoo depends on factors such as the tattooing technique and the colors used.

  • Hand-poked tattoos: such as those involving simple ink, are easier to remove than machine tattoos with special pigments.
  • Multi-colored tattoos: are more difficult to remove than black or dark blue tattoos. Some colors, such as white or yellow, commonly used in cover-up tattoos, may not be effectively removed with lasers and may require dermabrasion or other methods, which carry a risk of scarring.

With continuous treatment, the tattoo will gradually fade over time.

What Are the Side Effects of Treatment?

In general, laser tattoo removal has minimal side effects. After the scabs fall off, the tattoo gradually fades without leaving scars or other marks. After treatment, you may experience mild pain or a burning sensation in the treated area, which can be relieved with cold compresses and pain medication.
