ERCP and LC : Combined Endoscopic and Surgical Treatment for Gallstones

September 19 / 2025

ERCP and LC

Traditional open surgery, which uses a large abdominal incision and treats gallstones one at a time, has limitations. As a result, doctors have developed a new surgical method to treat both gallbladder stones and bile duct stones simultaneously.

ERCP and LC: A Combined Approach

ERCP and LC is a combined procedure designed to conveniently treat both gallbladder and bile duct stones at the same time. This minimally invasive technique uses small incisions, reducing complications and allowing for a faster, less painful recovery.

2 Components of the Treatment

1.  ERCP

This procedure involves using an endoscope, inserted through the mouth, to examine the bile and pancreatic ducts. It's ideal for diagnosing conditions like bile duct stones and inflammation (cholangitis) in hard-to-reach areas.

2.  LC

This is a minimally invasive surgery that involves making 3-4 small incisions (0.5 cm) in the upper right abdomen. A camera and surgical instruments are then used to remove the gallstones, which effectively minimizes damage to surrounding organs.

Important Information

1.  Doctor's Recommendation

The treatment of gallstones in both the gallbladder and the bile duct is complex and requires an experienced specialist. The surgery typically takes 2-3 hours, with a hospital stay of 2-3 days.

2.  Pre-Procedure Preparation

  • Stop antiplatelet or anticoagulant medications 7 days before the procedure.
  • Do not eat or drink anything for at least 6 hours before the procedure.
  • Inform the medical team of any underlying conditions, drug allergies, or allergies to seafood or contrast agents.

3.  Post-Procedure Care

  • Eat soft, non-spicy, and lukewarm food for at least 2-3 days.
  • A feeling of bloating may occur, but will gradually improve.
  • Begin light exercise and avoid lifting heavy objects.
  • If you experience abnormal symptoms such as abdominal discomfort, fever, or difficulty breathing, contact your doctor immediately.
